Well, the basic principle of decentralized leadership is simple: If you have an idea how a company can improve its products and services, you can set out to define the project and argue why you can do it and why the team should have confidence that the project will be implemented.

At team level, building this decentralized, less hierarchical organization requires new and unique leadership skills in the management team. Leaders need to be able to work in a real-time environment with decisions in their environment where things get done rather than waiting for leadership approval. In the long run, building these new competencies leads to more agile decision making and empowers employees to implement ideas and make changes that can benefit the business.
